what does it mean to be a phony according to holden

1. What does it mean to be phony, according to Holden? Is Holden himself guilty of being a phony? Explain.

According to holden a phony is anyone who may not always act themself. This could be anything to dressing up or pretending to be interested insomthing your not. A good example would be when he goes out the date with jane, he refers to her as phony alot because she acts very mature around the theater kids, and he finds it phony the wya they disccus the play. Holden himself is very guilty of being a phony. He always pretends to be something hes not and i believe he enjoys it very much. I also believe the only reason he calls others out on being a phony is because he sees himself in others and doesnt approve of it.

escape

If you needed to get away from your life for a short period of time (less than a week - 5 days at most) like Holden does in "Catcher in the Rye", where would you go? Would you escape to the country (somewhere other than Newcastle or Orono) or would you venture to a big city? Be realistic: it needs to be somewhere you can drive, take a bus or train to, and it shouldn't involve more than several hundred dollars. In your response, outline the sorts of things in your life that you would feel like 'escaping', reasons why, as well as what you think such a trip would do for you. Please respond in full sentences and full paragraph format. Feel free to do some BRIEF research online to broaden your knowledge of the location you choose. Keep it school-appropriate, but have fun!

If i needed to get away which is a common thing i would go somewhere peaceful. This could be many places like the lake or a cottage. I would like to be away from city and people somewhere you could get lost in your own thoughts and forget about all the troubles back home. This place would have to be stress free. I would choose somewhere like a cottage because something about nature that relaxes me. I would also be able to drive there and could just turn my cell off and ignore everyone. This would be my ideal place to go to escape.

ethics

ethics
Today I would like you to reflect on your own personal ethics and morals when it comes to work situations and your potential career.a) What sorts of moral and ethical situations (challenges) do you think you will face in your future career?b) Why is it important to be true to yourself and these morals?c) What is more important in your job: happiness or financial success? Why?d) How will you measure whether or not you are successful in your career? Explain.Keep in mind all the issues, ideas and situations we have discussed in class over the past couple weeks, and refer back to the worksheets we have done on the various newspaper and magazine articles which deal with these issues

A) i think in my future career what ever that is i will face many ethical situations. I ve worked at my fair share of places already and have expierenced stealing, lying, fighting and many other sittuations. I believe these are situations that take place in almost every work place and will ber in my future places as well.

B)It is always important to be true to your self, because no matter what you do you ahve to live with it the rest of your life. Id rather be able to sleep knowing im a good person then get ahead of others by lying and cheating my way there. Also if you stay true to your self and your morals others will recognize this and respect you for it.

C)I believe both are equally as important. SOme may say that happeniess is the most important thing however, if you work in a job that may make you happy but you dont make enough money the stress factor comes into play. I believe that the best is to find a good balance between money and a good job. Whenever i start to hate my job i look at the good parts about it and how its better then my other jobs. So in conclusion i believe finaccail success and happiness are equally as important, but its hard to have both so you must find balance.

D)I measure my success in a job by looking at the amount of work and effort i have put to get to taht place. If i have put in a great amount of effort and feel like i have achieved something i believe that is success. Also if i am happy with where i am and content with my job that would also be success in my eyes.

bloog entry #3

1. What does it mean to be phony, according to Holden? Is Holden himself guilty of being a phony? Explain.

to be phony according to Holden you have to be some one who do not act like who they are or refuse to aknowledge there short comings. He also thinks phonies are lying just for the fun of it, which is some what ironic because holden is a compulsive liar. Holden is guilty of being a phony himself because he lies and pretends he somthing hes not al the time, i think the main reason holden thinks everyone is phony is because he himself is confused of who he is. There for hes a phony, and hates him self for it. From this hate comes the reason why Holden dislikes other phonies.

What does it mean to be a good person?

A good person to me can mean alot of things. To be a good person you don't nesscaryly need to do community service or help your community every day. A good person should have good morals and be true to them self. They should do what is right and always treat people the way they want to be treated. A good person is true to there friends and family. A good person will help people without expecting somthing in return. It is not hard to be a good person and to alot of people it comes naturally.
